A new study by the EIRO industrial relations observatory looks at how working conditions can be improved through social dialogue. The study looks at a number of different areas such as working time and flexibility, occupational health and safety, training and lifelong learning and responses to an ageing workforce. There is a large number of examples in the overall report as well as the separate country studies, including examples from the public services - working time flexibility in Finnish local government, dealing with the ageing workforce in the Austrian energy sector.

Study looks at impact of outsourcing
A new study commissioned by FIPSU, the group of nine public sector unions, finds that in many cases any cost savings arising from outsourcing have been at the expense of employees. The report also found that workers affected by outsourcing end up being covered by inferior collective agreements. The reasons for outsourcing are often political and ideological and many public sector employers were reluctant to reveal what kind of cost savings or quality changes the outsourcing had brought. The high level of temporary work facing young people, the increase in enforced part-time work and low levels of training are among some of the main worries identified by the ETUC. Study looks at range of initiatives to tackle the gender pay gap
The EIRO industrial relations observatory has published a new report reviewing how governments, trade unions and employers are trying to reduce the gender pay gap. The report examines legislative changes as well as collective bargaining strategies. It also looks at other initiatives that attempt to address more fundamental issues such as the influence of education on an individual’s choice of occupation.
