The CGT and FSU public service trade union federations have called a day of action and strikes on 29 March in defence of the pensions system including retaining the right to retire at 60 and the right to early retirement in difficult or dangerous occupations. The unions also point out that the government's failure to address the decline in purchasing power in the public sector will also have an impact on the level of pensions.

The FNSFP public services federation organised a demonstration of public administration workers on 21 November in protest at the government’s proposed 2.9% pay increase for 2009. The federation has called for a 5% increase and said that 2.9% is inadequate as it does nothing to begin to recover the lost purchasing power suffered by public sector salaries in recent years. The FP CGIL public services federation has reacted to government plans to cut public spending by organizing a national demonstration on 12 June and this will be followed by a national public strike in most regions on 25 June (with action in some regions on 2 July). The cuts will have a direct impact on public sector workers’ pay. Previously agreed pay increases will be reduced and workers are also likely to lose the productivity-related elements of their salaries. The FO-Fonctionnaires civil service trade union is calling on members to join local demonstrations on 16 April to protest over pension reforms. The union wants to make it clear that 40 years of contributions are already too much and that increases to 41 or 42 years are completely unacceptable.
