Public services union UNISON has won up to £35,000 (€46,000) for 300 women working for Kirklees Council. The union proved that the women, working in home care and catering, had lost out in terms of bonuses when compared to male workers in similar jobs in areas like parks maintenance. UNISON is maintaining a combined strategy of using collective bargaining and legal cases to secure equal pay for women across the public services. The union has just submitted its 40,000th equal pay claim.

Nurse wins equal pay case
Public services union UNISON has supported one of its members in a successful equal pay case. Under the national health service’s Agenda for Change job evaluation system introduced in 2005, the job of a nurse is rated as equivalent to a maintenance supervisor. While acknowledging this, the local health service employer tried to argue that the local labour market and different bargaining arrangements justified higher pay for maintenance workers. Supported by the UNISON public service union, women workers at Sheffield City Council in the North East of England have won an equal pay case that is likely to have an impact across local government. The union argued that predominantly women workers in jobs such as social care were losing out as the predominantly male workers in jobs like street cleansing and gardening benefited from bonuses that could boost their basic pay by 30% or more. Equal pay victory for UNISON members
Around 1,500 low-paid women workers are set to receive substantial pay increases and back pay after UNISON won an important legal victory. The women had been successful at an earlier tribunal but their employer, Cumbria County Council, appealed against the ruling.
