EPSU solidarity with teaching assistants fighting pay cuts

(25 November 2016) Hundreds of teaching assistants in Durham, North East England, took their second period of two-day strike action this week. The workers, members of public services union Unison, are protesting against the local authority's attempt to move them on to term-time only contracts. This would mean pay cuts of up to 23% for some workers. The strike was very well supported and over 100 schools were affected.

The teaching assistants' action doesn't stop there. As of today and until the end of term, they will work to rule. This will mean sticking strictly to the hours specified in their contracts and no coming in early, staying late and taking work home.

EPSU sent a solidarity message, underlining the importance of this dispute in terms of the impact on the incomes of low paid, mainly women workers.
