(May 2016) On 20 April the BDDSz childcare workers' union, one of EPSU's newest affiliates, took strike action along with other unions in the social services sector. After two and a half years of negotiations, the unions decided to resort to industrial action to try to make progress with their claims for an increase in pay and to improve working time arrangements. Average salaries in the social services sector are 35% below the average for the economy as a whole, clearly justifying the 20% pay claim. EPSU sent a message of solidarity. Unions to strike over pay, pensions and working time
The STAL local government union and other public service unions in the Frente Comum have called a one-day strike in public administration on 26 October. The unions have a range of demands including a 4% increase on pay (with a minimum increase of EUR 60) and pensions, measures to tackle precarious employment and also to ensure that all public service workers have the right to the 35-hour week.
Second strike by energy staff over working time
(July 2016) Over 400 energy meter readers around the country took their second period of four-day strike action in protest at demands by the E.On company that they work 30 minutes extra three nights a week. The unions - Unite, Unison and GMB - are concerned about long working days and that the company won't stop there if the extra hours are agreed. Read more at Unite.
Federations mobilise over health, pay and working time
The health federations of CGT, FO and SUD are taking strike action and mobilising on 25 June to defend the health service, to call for salary increases and to protect working time arrangements which have been under threat particularly at the AP-HP public hospitals in the Paris region. While these unions are focusing in particularly on health the CGT confederation has also called a more general mobilisation calling for a general increase in salaries.
