After consulting with members, ver.di has drawn up the key elements of its demands in preparation for negotiations covering 2.1 million workers in federal and local government. The union wants €100 a month extra for all workers, including trainees, plus 3.5%, amounting to an increase of 6.7%. The union says this will go some way to rewarding the productivity of a broad range of public sector workers and to closing the gap with pay in other sectors. The claim will also include a demand for 30 day's paid holiday for all workers and for trainees to be taken on at the end of their training period.

Energy sector: 4.5% increase and jobs for trainees
The 25000 workers covered by the energy agreement that includes the EON energy company are to get a 4.5% pay increase in two stages - 2.4% in February 2014 and 2.1% in February 2015. The agreement runs until 31 January 2016. Union hotline exposes poor conditions for care trainees
A telephone hotline set up by the FNV public services union in early November was used by over 500 people, many of whom revealed disturbing information on the situation facing trainees in the care sector. There was evidence of trainees used effectively as full-time employees to cover for holidays and sickness, being required to carry out tasks on their own for which they had not been fully trained and having responsibility for other trainees and temporary workers. Important holiday pay ruling for union
The GPA-DJP services union has won an important court ruling clarifying that overtime should be included in the calculation of holiday and Christmas pay. The case was taken by the union in collaboration with the works council at the Caritas Socialis social care organisation. The outcome benefits not just the 850 employees at Caritas Socialis but around 120000 employees who are covered by the social care sector agreement.
