Spanish firefighters call for national framework for fire services

Bomberos de todo el Estado se manifiestan hoy en Madrid por una regulación estatal consensuada

Firefighters are demonstrating in Madrid today (26 October) to demand a national, legal framework for fire services that would regulate employment and working conditions.

The protest has been called by the FSC-CCOO trade union which argues that the major problems facing the service – such as budget cuts and ageing of the workforce – have not been helped by the lack of a national approach to regulation of the sector. This makes it hard to tackle shortage of staff and resources and guarantee quality of service. The union also wants to see proper application of legislation on occupational health and safety and, in particular, the recognition of cancer as an occupational disease.

This demonstration is part of a wide and long-running campaign for a national, legal framework supported by firefighter unions.
