EPSU urges European Parliament to support an EU Financial Transactions Tax now!

(March 2, Brussels) The European Federation of Public Services Unions (EPSU) is heavily campaigning to introduce a Financial Transactions Tax – FTT- at EU level, as a first, but significant, step.

Amid unprecedented public spending cuts, EPSU urge citizens to contact their Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to convince them we need an EU FTT to help tackle public deficits caused by the crisis and reduce speculation. On this website:
http://www.financialtransactiontax.eu/ citizens can contact in their native language their MEPs and urge them to vote on 8 March for the introduction of an EU financial transactions tax. The website has been online since late last week and more than 75.000 e-mails have already been sent to MEPs.

“This Financial Transactions Tax, will put things in the right balance, so far the ones paying the price of the crisis have been nurses, firefighters, teachers, tax inspectors… those that did not cause the crisis. We demand the banks and speculators to pay their share”. Carola Fischbach-Pyttel, EPSU General Secretary declared.

The European parliament is expected to vote on a report on 8 March on innovative financing ( Podimata report) and EPSU hopes that this campaign will help mobilize enough support to introduce, in that report, an amendment in favour of an EU FTT now.
