Commissioner Spidla approves European Gas Social Dialogue Committee

European Commissioner Vladimir Spidla informed EPSU of the establishment of the Social Dialogue Committee for the European Gas Industry. The employers side is represented by Eurogas.

Commissioner Spidla refers in his letter to the importance of the gas sector in Europe. "The gas sector is a key sector in Europe. It contributes to employment, competitiveness and innovation. The development of the sector is essential to energy security of the European Union."

EPSU Deputy General Secretary Jan Willem Goudriaan comments:
"We welcome that the work of the social partners in the European gas sector has been recognised. We are confident that the work with the employers will bring benefits to the workers in the sector. Recent developments in the European energy sector such as the blackouts and the dependence of the EU on imported gas underline the essential nature of this sector and its long-term perspective. "

The Commission, Eurogas and the unions have already had a first exchange and the formal launch of the committee will take place 15 March 2007.
