Waste workers organised by the CGT trade union in both the public and private sectors will be taking strike action on 12 May. The union is campaigning for a recognition of the arduous nature of the work, noting that waste workers have one of the lowest life expectancies of any group of workers. The demands include the right to early retirement, a shorter working week and a monthly salary of €1700, equivalent to the CGT's demands for the statutory minimum wage.

Waste workers strike over pay
(August 2016) The STAL local government union organised four days of industrial action at the Valorlis solid waste treatment company that operates in the Leiria district of central Portugal. The workers were on an overtime ban on 13, 14 and 15 August, followed by 24 hours of strike action on 16th. The union argues that shareholders in the privatised company have been benefitting from company profits while workers have been denied pay increases as the company claims it has had to follow government austerity measures. Demonstration over special retirement schemes
The energy, rail and transport federations within the CGT confederation are planning a national demonstration on 22 January to maintain opposition to government plans to reform the special retirement schemes that cover these workers in the public sector. The CGT rejects plans to increase the number of years of contributions required to get a full pension and also opposes breaking the index link with salaries. Read more at > CGT (FR)
Firefighters mobilise over retirement age
(July 2016) Firefighters have been mobilising around the country and in some regions taking industrial action to defend their right to early retirement. In some regions firefighters have been handing in petitions to local authorities while in addition some firefighters have been dealing with emergency calls only. Firefighters currently have early retirement rights between 55 and 59 and want to resist the demand by employers to move to 60. Read more at FNV (NL).
