Unions coordinate protest over pensions

Over 2500 workers took part in a national trade union demonstration against a bill to reform the pensions system. The unions are challenging plans to increase the retirement age and reduce benefits. Their counter proposals include a higher basic pension, better working conditions for older workers and measures to help those suffering with health problems or carrying out difficult and arduous jobs. The unions also want to see a public complementary pension system and they called for a meeting with the ministers of social security and labour.

Unions coordinate strikes over pay, jobs and pensions

On 10 July thousands of public service workers across the UK took strke action over pay, jobs and pensions. The largest action was in local government in England, Wales and Northern Ireland with unions calling for an improvement on the 1% pay offer from employers. The FBU firefighters' union was continuing its dispute over changes to their pension scheme while civil servants in the PCS union were also taking action over pay and jobs. EPSU affiliates involved in the action included UNISON, Unite, GMB, PCS, FBU, NIPSA and SIPTU. They were joined on the day by teachers organised in the NUT trade

Seven union organizations co-ordinate action over pensions

Unions plan to continue their protests and resistance against government plans to raise the pension age. The CGT, CFDT, FO, CFCT, FSU, Solidaires and UNSA argue that the proposals fail to take account of workers, particularly women, with irregular contribution records and those employed in difficult and dangerous occupations. Following the day of action on 29 June, the unions are committed to maintain their opposition throughout the legislative process and will organize the next day of action on 7 September the opening of the debate in parliament.
