Federations mobilise over attacks on workers and services

While the national government has announced another year of pay freezes across the public sector, regional governments are planning their own range of cuts to pay and conditions and services. Public sector unions are planning a series of demonstrations and strikes in response to these attacks. In Valencia trade unions are planning legal action as well as demonstrations against the regional government’s planned savings of more than €1 billion. A series of meetings and mobilisations began on 13 January and will continue with three demonstrations planned for 26 January and a region-wide protest

The main public service federations - FP-CGIL, CISL-FP, UIL-FPL and UIL-PA - organised a demonstration in Rome on 12 December as part of a period of agitation to put pressure on the government to guarantee funding for the renegotiation of collective agreements for 2019-2021. EPSU general secretary Jan Willem Goudriaan joined the demonstration. The unions want to ensure there is funding for adequate pay increases and for the introduction of a new job classfication system. The four public service federations - Fp Cgil, Cisl Fp, Pa Uil and Uil Fpl - are organising three large assemblies of workers at the beginning of July in Milan on the 1st, Rome on the 2nd and in Bari on 3rd. These will mark the start of protests over the continuing freeze on collective bargaining in the public sector. The unions want to get bargaining back on track and make it clear to the government that a proper reform of public administration will only be possible with full consultation of the trade unions.
