Report shows importance of training and staffing levels in childcare

The FOA public services union has highlighted a recent report which shows a clear link between staff ratios in nurseries and children’s later performance at school. The union is particularly concerned about the impact of reductions in staff in recent years with more than 4,000 full-time jobs cut, much more than would be needed to keep in line with the falling birth rate. The outlook for childcare is also not good with four out of 10 municipalities planning cuts in 2012. The union is arguing for the implementation of minimum staffing levels and says that the report also justifies its demands for better training for teaching assistants.

The FOA public services union has warned of the consequences of failing to maintain minimum staffing levels in childcare. It says that a survey of parents using childcare already reveals that 18% of parents have been affected by falling standards and reduced opening hours. FOA also quotes a television documentary that highlights the benefits to children of ensuring the minimum level of one childcare teacher per six children. Report supports case for minimum staffing levels in healthcare

A new report from Duisberg-Essen university provides support for the arguments of ver.di that urgent action is required to deal with an estimated shortage of 162000 full-time workers in healthcare and a legal minimum staffing requirement would be a practical and reasonable way of dealing with this. The report also argues that there is a need to make healthcare jobs more attractive.
