The Fp-Cgil public service federation has launched an online support service for health workers on the front line of the fight against COVID-19. Recognising the increased psycho-social risks for care staff working long hours and having to adapt to emergency working arrangements, the union has put together a pool of 40 or so psychologists, psychiatrists and other welfare support workers who are providing their services free for this online service.

Union wins compensation for psychological trauma
The SIPTU services union has won the right for psychiatric nurses to be assessed and compensated for both psychological trauma and physical injury following an assault in the course of their duties. The government introduced a compensation scheme on physical attacks in January this year but it was only through trade union pressure that the scheme as been extended to include psychological impact. On 28 October, Amnesty International and EPSU joined forces for an online event to discuss the human rights violations of health and social care workers during COVID-19.
Confederation backs action to support health workers
The ADEDY public sector confederation called for a three-hour work stoppage on 16 June in support of action organised by the POEDIN and OENGE health unions. There was main demand for higher public spending on health with specific calls to address the 40000 vacancies in the sector, for permanent status for the 16000 workers on temporary contracts who have often been at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19, for higher pay - salaries start at only EUR 650 a month - and improvements in a range of allowances related to risk of infection, night work and holiday pay.
