Analysis shows most workers not seeing benefits of increased productivity

A new analysis covering wage and productivity developments in 25 EU countries indicates that pay for most workers has not risen in line with productivity. The report says that there is still a clear link between wages and productivity in most countries and that the trend has been for the two to be more in alignment in recent years. However, this development has yet to compensate fully for the 25-year period up to 1994 when wages lagged behind productivity.

Survey shows most think public sector workers are underpaid

A survey by the JHL public sector trade union found that most people thought that public sector workers in a range of low-paid occupations were underpaid. The 10 occupations used in the survey were mainly those where the majority of workers are women and the survey supported an average pay rise of €217 for these workers. Actual figures for basic pay and average pay for these workers revealed that most relied on large amounts of additional pay to supplement basic pay, with additional pay the equivalent of 30% of basic pay in the case of nurses. Semester analysis shows pressure for reform of collective bargaining

The European Trade Union Institute has published an updated analysis of the treatment of social issues in the European Semester - the process of economic policy coordination. This reveals, for example, the extent to which the country-specific recommendations address the question of collective bargaining, with the European institutions calling for reforms in many countries, with the accent on decentralisation of bargaining despite the lack of evidence that this produces any economic benefits.
