A social model worth fighting to save

(21 May 2014) Many PSI members want to know how public services unions in Europe are opposing and fighting for an alternative to the unprecedented attack on workers and unions rights. They recognise that the European unions contributed to building this social model, through collective bargaining and social dialogue, which provides the basis for equitable distribution of wealth, including universal access to quality public services. This model is unique, special, and is the aspiration of many workers in the world.

This model is worth fighting to save says PSI General Secretary Rosa Pavanelli during her keynote address at the EPSU 9th Congress held in Toulouse, France, 20-23 May 2014. Rosa introduced the discussion on Resolution n. 3 “Strengthening workers’ rights and employment in Europe through collective bargaining, social dialogue and industrial action”.

Collective bargaining committee backs deal worth 3.5%

Germany

Workers in federal and local government will be asked to vote on a new collective agreement that was accepted by ver.di’s collective bargaining committee. Ver.di says that overall the deal is worth 3.5%. There is a 1.2% pay increase backdated to 1 January 2010 and then there will be two increases in 2011 – 0.6% on 1 January and 0.5% on 1 August. There will also be a €240 lump sum paid on 1 January 2011. The union’s assessment is that this is a reasonable agreement bearing in mind the difficult economic and financial situation. Health service pay increase worth 8% over three years

U.K.

Trade union in the health sector are consulting their members over a three-year pay deal that is worth around 8% in total but with higher increases for the lower paid. Pay would rise by 2.75% this year with a 2.54% increase in 2009. However, next year would see the minimum pay rate set at £6.77 an hour (€8.50) so the increase for the lowest paid would be 5.7%. In 2010 most workers would get 2.5% but a minimum increase of £420 (€525) would mean 3.17% for the lowest paid.
