Youth workers protest over funding and working conditions

The FNV public services trade union organised a demonstration by youth workers in The Hague on 14 January to protest at the government's failure to tackle serious problems in the sector which are leading to long waiting times for young people to get support and a staff shortage as many workers leave the sector because of the pay and working conditions. The union is calling for EUR 750 million extra funding for the sector and an end to the competitive tendering system which has led to undercutting of contracts, driving prices down and forcing cost cutting across the sector.

Health workers to protest over pay and funding

The Health Workers' Union of Ukraine has called a national demonstration on 12 September in protest at the government's failure to respond to a labour dispute raised by the union last year. The union is claiming a general rise for all healthworkers as well as resolution of an issue relating to highly skilled workers' pay. The demonstration will also highlight the need to increase health sector funding and will protest against government plans for restructuring and to cut hospital beds.

Unions protest over hospital funding

Workers at the hospital in the Zug canton took part in a demonstration earlier this month demanding proper funding and decent pay to maintain a good standard of care. The unions sent a letter to the canton government as it refused to meet representatives of the works council. The unions are worried that pressure from the health insurance companies to cut funding to hospitals will threaten their collective agreement and could lead to cuts in pay as labour costs make up 70% of overall hospital costs. Calls for more childcare funding and better pay and conditions

(November 2016) The IMPACT public services union joined with the Association of Childcare Professionals in a demonstration on 15 November calling for increased funding for childcare services. The union also called for improved pay and conditions for childcare workers many of whom face low pay and precarious working conditions, leading to a situation where staff turnover in the sector is over 20%. The SIPTU trade union supported a similar call earlier in the month in collaboration with children's organisations.
