The VIDA and GPA-DJP trade unions have negotiated a 1.5% increase for most workers covered by the private sector health and social services agreement. However, the deal includes a minimum increase of €24 which means the lowest paid get an increase of 1.86%. The unions say that the successful negotiations would not have been possible without the active support and intervention of workers and works council members.

The five national trade union confederations sent a solidarity message to the MESZK chamber of healthcare professionals in support of its protest march in Budapest on 31 July. The demonstrators called for pay increases for nurses in line with those already awarded to doctors and argued this was crucial to help stem the migration of nurses to western Europe. Earlier this year the five confederations also came together to file a complaint with the International Labour Organisation over the government’s imposition of new legislation which removes the rights to negotiate and take strike action
After difficult negotiations the VIDA and GPA-DJP trade unions have agreed a 2% pay increase for the 80,000 workers in the private health and social care sector. The agreement runs for 12 months from February 2011 and the unions argue that they have secured a small real pay increase as well as improvements in two areas – leave to look after seriously ill relatives and past service entitlement. The new rules on past service will benefit workers who change employers within the sector as it will mean there past service will have to be taken into account in setting their pay level. The GPA-DJP and vida trade unions have negotiated a 3.6% pay increase for the 75,000 workers covered by the BAGS collective agreement. The increase applies from 1 January 2009 and includes other salary-related payments. An important element of the deal is the agreement by the employers to take on training costs. The BAGS covers workers in involved in the care of the disabled and the elderly as well as childcare workers and other occupations. The agreement was introduced in some regions in 2004 only on the basis of setting minimum rates of pay but its pay structure will now be applied in full
