Workers across Europe gather for Public Service Day

Public Service day 23 June 2022 Thank you

(29 June 2022) EPSU and its affiliates came together to mark UN Public Service Day on Thursday, 23 June 2022. We used the day as an occasion to draw attention to our calls for quality public services, higher wages and better conditions, more staff and to stop the commercialisation of care, health and public services. The day underlined the strength of our work together.

Events were held across Europe. Union affiliates gathered in Romania with government representatives, regulators, employers and EPSU staff to discuss strengthening public services for a just transition. In Rome, affiliates from Spain, Italy, Portugal and France joined government representatives and EPSU staff to stand up for quality public services. Delegates at the ETUC’s Executive Committee also showed their solidarity with public service workers.

In collaboration with FNV and Belgian affiliate unions, an action was held in front of the European Parliament to mark the contributions of the essential public service worker. The action was attended by several Members of the European Parliament as well as union affiliates and representatives from other organisations. You can find photos of the action here.

An opinion piece by Mette Nord, our President and Jan Willem Goudriaan, General Secretary was published by Brussels Times. The article calls for policymakers to move past the applause seen in the early days of the pandemic and towards meaningful progress for all public sector workers.

Unions from across Europe shared photos and videos from their Public Service Day celebrations, many of which can be found here. If you have not done so, please send us your own photos, articles or videos. Together they make our common voice and demands visible. Different countries and unions share the same struggle for quality public services.
