We made it!

(12 February 2013) The month of January has been a whirlwind for the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) but we have made history! We are the first organization to have collected over 1 million signatures for a European Citizens Initiative. The ‘Right to Water’ ECI has proven to be successful and we have managed to achieve the first target, the first million. Now we will continue the campaign to ensure that we have as many countries as necessary and to get as close as we can to 2 million signatures for water as a public good.

Unfortunately this message is not reaching all quarters in Brussels and Members of the European Parliament seem to keep voting for market-friendly legislation on concessions that might endanger a back-door privatization of the very same services that people are asking to keep in public hands. We will ensure to make their voices loud and clear: water is a public good and must be declared a human right outside the rules of the internal market!

I would like to thank the hundreds of thousands of people that have signed and also those that have campaigned for this historic achievement. As I said, we will continue our struggle for water as a public good, for decent work and for quality public services.

Yours
