(19 February 2007) The public interest such as protecting the environment and public health should prevail over promoting competition and the internal market in waste argued the trade unions representing waste workers at the EPSU waste seminar 15 February 2007, Berlin.
They supported the ETUC initiative to obtain a million signatures for the petition on public services.
A legislative initiative will give the EU another basis to judge conflicts between the public interest and competition and internal market rules.
The unions represented more then 100.000 waste workers in Europe.
