(30 June, 2025) EPSU joined thousands of marchers in Budapest on 28 June 2025 to stand in solidarity with the LGBT+ community and defend democratic freedoms under attack in Hungary and beyond.
Despite police warnings, legal threats, and a last-minute attempt by Hungary’s ruling parties to block the annual human rights march, the event went ahead as a municipal gathering supported by the Mayor of Budapest. Trade unionists from across Europe marched side by side with civil society and elected officials to send a powerful message: attacks on LGBT+ rights are attacks on fundamental rights, workers’ rights, and the freedom to organise.
In a joint statement ahead of the march, EPSU and our global federation PSI reaffirmed our unwavering support for inclusive public services and the dignity of all workers, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. We emphasised the crucial role of trade unions in defending equality, decent work and democratic values, both at work and in society.
EPSU backed the call to stop the use of facial recognition and mass surveillance at Pride events, standing up for the right to protest without fear or intimidation.
The message is clear: LGBTI rights are workers’ rights. Trade unions will always be part of the struggle for dignity, safety and equality for all.
