TISA: Lifting the Veil of Secrecy

(16 October 2014 - Press Communication) Public Services International (PSI), in partnership with Our World Is Not For Sale (OWINFS) and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), will be holding the very first global conference to provide a critical perspective on the proposed Trade in Services Agreement (TISA) in Geneva on 17 October 2014.

PSI and OWINFS will present a new report on how TISA is being used to accomplish transnational corporations´deregulatory agenda. This new report will complement the study "TISA vs. Public Services" that examines how TISA would foster and lock-in privatisation. Leading global experts, trade unions from the public and private sector, but also civil society and government representatives from around the world will discuss the threats posed by the TISA.

Shockingly, the TISA will prevent governments from returning public services to public hands even when privatisations fail. Incredibly, in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, the TISA also seeks to further deregulate financial markets.” says PSI General Secretary Rosa Pavanelli.

With such high stakes for people and our planet, the secrecy surrounding the TISA negotiations is a scandal. Who in a democratic country will accept their government secretly agreeing to laws that fundamentally shift power and wealth, bind future governments and restrict their nation´s ability to provide for citizens? The TISA negotiating texts must be released for public scrutiny and decision-making and must not restrict any government´s ability to regulate in the public interest.” concludes Rosa Pavanelli.

EPSU is following the negotiations closely and demands that the European Commission publishes all negotiating documents to have a proper transparent debate about it.
