Solidarity with the workers of Greece for their 24-hour strike action

EPSU General Secretary wrote to EPSU affiliated unions in Greece to express EPSU’s support for their 24-hour strike action today, Thursday 8 December. We find it astonishing that the Eurogroup is demanding further reductions in worker and trade union rights.

We agree wholeheartedly with the ITUC and ETUC who argue that these measures will do nothing to improve the performance of the Greek economy.

Collective bargaining and employment rights have already been radically undermined as a result of pressure from the Eurogroup and previously the Troika and it is apparent that an economy based on precarious employment will never deliver a sustained and equitable recovery.

Confederations announce 24-hour general strike

The ADEDY public sector confederation will be joining with the GSEE private sector confederation and other trade union and professional organisations in a 24-hour general strike on 30 May in protest at the continuing austerity being imposed on workers and citizens. ADEDY says that public sector workers are still suffering from pay cuts of up to 40% while more precarious working conditions have spread across the public services and there are critical staff shortages in important areas of health and social services.

The ADEDY public sector confederation organised a 24-hour strike on 19 December in its latest protest at austerity measures. It argues that the cuts in public sector are so deep that it can no longer operate effectively and deliver services to citizens.
