(27 October 2021) The German Union Verdi with the support of EPSU is organizing an online talk about digital platforms. They have become an essential part of our daily lives. Digitization plays a key role in the negotiations on a new German government, in many of our unions and in all public services. Platforms give us new freedoms and at the same time restrict us. Online platforms penetrate more and more areas of life that involve social participation, democracy, and basic services. They effectively create new public infrastructures - but are in the hands of private corporations. The discussion will consider governments’ responsibility to provide services of general interest in the context of the "platform society". What new responsibilities and functions arise for the public sector? How can we counter platform monopolies and strengthen democratic governance?
