Panama leaks: EPSU call for end to tax avoidance and ban on tax havens once and for all

(Brussels, 4 April 2016 - Press Communication) Commenting on today’s leaked Panama Papers on the tax dealings of law firm Mossack Fonseca, EPSU’s General Secretary Jan Willem Goudriaan said: “The leaked Panama Papers give new insight into shocking extent of global tax avoidance by the rich and powerful and are a stark warning against the status quo. Despite EU leaders’ promises to put an end to tax havens and corporate secrecy, existing regulation has proved to be entirely lacking in its ability to crack down on these practices that enable the mass transfer of wealth from the many to the few, to the tune of many billions of euros. And while the multinationals and wealthy individuals refuse to pay their fair share, ordinary citizens and public services continue to suffer under government-imposed austerity cuts. This cannot go on. “Trade unions have long called for full tax transparency, where multinationals give full and public disclosure of their tax dealings and subsidiaries for every country in which they operate. Today’s leaks on law firm Mossack Fonseca give a new urgency to these calls: it’s time to end tax avoidance and ban tax havens once and for all.”
