Lively debates at collective bargaining conference

Over 80 participants from 20 countries took part in EPSU's social dialogue and collective bargaining conference in Brussels on 13 and 14 January. A key theme of the conference was the impact of economic governance and this was highlighted in presentations by Ronald Janssen of the ETUC and Fernando de la Rocha of the 1er Mayo Foundation in Spain. Researchers from the Labour Research Department in the UK, the ETUI in Brussels and the WSI institute in Germany provided analyses of developments and trends in public and private sector pay. In other sessions, there were lively exchanges over potential ETUC policy on minimum wages as well as debates on working time, pay and conditions in the social services and the pressure to "modernise" public administration coming from the European Semester. Debate over collective bargaining

(December 2016) Trade unions, employers and the government are in debate over the pattern of collective bargaining in the country. The EK employers' organisation is looking to sector bargaining while the government favours sector bargaining with a cap set by the pay increase negotiated in the export sector. Trade unions prefer sector bargaining in a national framework and are discussing the implications of possible new arrangements - particularly what the export sector gap would mean for the services sector and scope for negotiating higher increases for sectors dominated by women workers.

Conference debates quality employment

Europe

(January 2017) Over 120 trade union representatives from across Europe took part in EPSU's conference on quality employment on 10-11 January. The debates covered how to define quality employment, trends in labour law reform in Eastern Europe, the ETUC's pay rise campaign, how to improve pay in the social care sector, workloads and staffing in prisons and hospitals, precarious work and social dialogue. The conference was organised with the financial support of the European Commission.
