Global labour community shows solidarity with US unions as rights are threatened in Supreme Court

Working people's day of action 24 February 2018 USA

(21 February 2018) Funded by conservative groups like the Koch Brothers the US Supreme Court will hear the case Janus vs AFSCME. AFSCME is a union organizing workers at state and municipal level. Unions might be obliged to represent and defend non-members but will not be reimbursed costs for this. The case is argued under the guise of freedom of speech. The aim of the conservative and corporate supporters of the case is to hurt the unions and diminish their power. The case will be heard before the Court 26 February. Unions and other groups will be demonstrating on 24 February in the USA. Unions across the world take action on 24th and 26th. PSI is coordinating actions of public service unions. EPSU sent a letter to the US ambassador in Belgium and the US mission to the EU.

24 February is very symbolic for the US labour movement.  A coalition of groups was formed to support striking waste workers who were fighting against low pay and for bargaining rights and the recognition of their union. Martin Luther King and AFSCME played a prominent role in that fight
