General strike in Greece: 28-29 June

(27 June 2011) EPSU sends solidarity greetings to its Greek affiliate ADEDY and the GSEE private sector confederation

On Tuesday and Wednesday 28-29 June the ADEDY civil service confederation and GSEE private sector confederation will again be mobilising their members in a general strike in protest at the austerity measures being implemented by the Greek government under pressure from the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund.

ADEDY and GSEE have managed to sustain a series of national protests over a period of more than two years as the austerity measures have bitten deeper but as the demands from the international institutions become tougher and tougher.

The Greek government has a new finance minister but is following the same path, facing a demand for an additional round of public spending cuts worth €5.5 billion.

EPSU general secretary Carola Fischbach-Pyttel said: “We send a clear message of solidarity to our Greek colleagues who have shown such determination in their sustained protests against the austerity measures.”

She added: “So far these measures have done nothing to calm the markets with the rating agencies seemingly intent on deepening the crisis by pushing up the cost of debt repayments for the Greek government. The international institutions need to formulate a plan that focuses on helping the Greek economy grow out of the crisis and not one based on imposing more pain and hardship on workers in both the public and private sectors.”.
