European institutions staff strike today!

(Brussels 21 November) Yesterday European Union staff in Brussels decided to down their tools and assemble outside the heart of the European Union quarter, in the Schuman roundabout, to protest again for the cuts imposed on them.

All the trade unions within European institutions have decided to go on strike as a follow up of their successful action on November 16. The European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) fully supports European Union institutions employees and their trade union USF (Union Syndicale Fédérale) in this strike that will start after noon. The action involves all trade unions in the institutions.

As we said in our previous message, beyond the serious downgrading of working conditions in the EU Institutions, exceeding by far the EU Commission’s proposal will certainly undermine the ability of the Institutions to fulfill their obligations towards the staff and citizens in Europe.

Job cuts at the EU Institutions will entail the already well-known dangers from the austerity measures that are hitting the public services in a majority of EU countries.

An action will take place at Schuman roundabout [Rond-point Schuman] from 12 o'clock, EPSU and its affiliate in the European institutions USF (Union Syndicale Fédérale) will have a press point at this rally.

EPSU urges EU Institutions to continue to seek a reasonable solution with the full involvement of the employees.
