European Commission starts to implement its response to ECI

(25 June 2014) The European Commission has launched a consultation on the quality of drinking water supply in response to the ECI right2water, the only successful ECI so far. We invite the civil society and European citizens to participate in this consultation and to address the human rights aspect of water, the responsibility of governments to provide the service, the fact that it is a “natural monopoly” (there is no market!) and to address that outsourcing or delegation of services do NOT lead to better quality.

We would appreciate if you can give examples from your country (failed privatisation or concessions and good examples of remunicipalisation). For higher quality services governments have to set higher standards, e.g. by putting a ban or maximum on the use of pesticides and chemicals in agriculture and industries. Furthermore we would like to promote progressive and social tariffs (to improve affordability).

The consultation will close on the 23 September and it can be done in all 23 official languages of the European Commission. EPSU will of course participate in the consultation together with its affiliates.
