EPSU welcomes the European Parliament vote to back patent waiver for coronavirus vaccines

European Parliament vote TRIPS waiver yes

(10 June 2021) Following a major campaign of EPSU and others the European Parliament voted in favor of a resolution that supports waiving patents for vaccines. We and many others expect this to assist ending the coronavirus pandemic.

EPSU General Secretary Jan Willem Goudriaan comments:  “We welcome this decision and thank the MEPs. It is now for the European Commission and the European governments in the G7, G20 and the WTO to support the #peoplesvaccine. It is good news that the French government has indicated its support as well.

The text of the EP calls for “support for proactive, constructive and text-based negotiations for a temporary waiver of the WTO TRIPS Agreement, aiming to enhance global access to affordable COVID-19- related medical products and to address global production constraints and supply shortages.”
