EPSU supports EP vote on 20 weeks fully paid maternity leave

REQUEST FOR URGENT ACTION

Yesterday 23 February, the European Parliament's women’s rights committee adopted the Estrela report on the revised pregnant workers directive- 19 votes in favour, 13 against.

Vote in plenary is scheduled for 24 or 25 March.

Given the opposition by some governments, business and some groups in parliament ( EPP and Liberals), we need you to contact your MEPs and express support for the Estrela report , especially :
- Increase of maternity leave from 14 weeks to 20 weeks fully paid (Commission’s proposal is 18 weeks; WHO recommendation is 24 weeks)
- application to domestic workers and self-employed
- 2 weeks' paid paternity leave; our initial view is that paternity leave should be part of a separate legislative proposal but as nothing seems to be in the Commission’s pipeline it is better to secure this right via the maternity directive than nothing
- stronger legal protection on return of maternity leave ( ban on dismissal from beginning of pregnancy to at least 6 months after end of maternity leave; right to return to same job or equivalent post on same pay level)
- time off for breastfeeding
