EPSU stands together with SES against the violent attack on health workers

EPSU General Secretary Jan Willem Goudriaan sends a letter to the Health Minister of Turkey denouncing the attack on SES members.

Health workers from Trade Union of Employees in Public Health and Social Services (SES) in Diyarbakır were attacked by an employee of a subcontracting company during their boycott of outsourced cafeteria services. The attacker fired a weapon against the workers, though there were no casualties nor injuries.

After the violent attack, SES Union made a statement saying this is a result of the Ministry of Health’s outsourcing policy, which lets mafia-like companies make room for themselves within public services. EPSU General Secretary Jan Willem Goudriaan, General Secretary, EPSU sent a letter to the Ministry of Health of Turkey, Dr. Fahrettin Koca, denouncing the attack. In the letter, Goudriaan says “we remind you that it is your responsibility to protect health workers” and demands an effective investigation to prevent further attacks against workers.

Prison unions, ACAIP, FeSP-UGT and FSC-CCOO, organised lunchtime protests outside every prison service establishment on 20 March. They were reacting to the knife attack on a member of staff at the Soto del Real prison in Madrid. The unions argue that prison service management is failing to take adequate action to tackle increasing violence across the service, noting that the prison service has been condemned by the Central Labour Inspectorate for failing to properly apply occupational health legislation.

Violent incident highlights understaffing crisis

The vida private services union has reported with concern a violent incident between patients at an addition clinic in Vienna. The union says it was shocking that at the time there was only one member of staff on the night shift responsible for 45 patients. Vida wants immediate action to ensure no member of staff works alone and calls for support for its new campaign, "More of us, better for everyone." The campaign calls for 20% more staff in hospitals and national, legal minimum staffing levels along with measures to boost education and training.
