(31.10.2024) EPSU has shared its profound solidarity with the people of Spain as they confront the devastating aftermath of floods in Valencia, Castille, and Andalusia. With the death toll approaching 100, our thoughts go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of those who lost their lives or were injured in this tragic event.
We commend the dedication of the firefighters, emergency responders, and healthcare workers who continue to risk their lives to protect their communities. We join our Spanish affiliates in condemning employers who forced workers into dangerous situations. We share their outrage at the decision by Valencia’s far-right government to dissolve its emergency unit last year—an action that left communities vulnerable.
The impact of these floods on infrastructure - damaging roads, bridges, hospitals, schools, and care facilities - underlines the urgent need for enhanced resilience planning and robust investment in public services. EPSU calls on the European Union to demonstrate solidarity through meaningful support as Spain rebuilds and strengthens its public services against future climate-related disasters.
