EPSU stands up for safety of nuclear workers and submits amendments European nuclear safety directive

(10 March 2009) The European Commission has submitted a Directive on improving nuclear safety in the EU.

EPSU has submitted a number of amendments to MEPs to improve not only safety in general but also safety for workers in the nuclear industry. While in many countries nuclear energy is highly controversial or is being faced out, in others it will remain part of the fuel fix. Several affiliated unions represent workers in the nuclear industry. The highest possible standards need to be available and the unions should be involved in any discussions. And the problem of sub-contracted workers in the nuclear industry needs to be addressed. They are often less informed, less skilled and exploited.
