On behalf of EPSU, representing more than 8 million public service workers in Europe, I would like to express our full support for your one-day strike action in the public sector on 10 May to protest against the low wages of public sector workers in Greece and the need for investing in essential public services.
Your demands to put in place a new wage system allowing for real negotiated pay increases, for a budget increase for education and health and for overall improvement of the civil service will benefit the Greek society as a whole.
Today, Greek public sector workers remain amongst the lowest paid workers in the European Union.
EPSU calls on the Greek government to act upon the trade unions' demands as a matter of urgency.
This follows on from refuse collectors' strike last April protesting for a pay increase.
Quality public services rely on a well-paid, well-trained and properly consulted workforce. Social dialogue and social concertation are key instruments for modernising and improving public services which are the basis of the European Social Model EPSU and its affiliates are striving to defend.
I wish you and your colleagues success in your ongoing endeavors to improve the working conditions of public service workers, and civil servants in particular.
