(17 August 2021) The Brazilian public service unions are calling for a general strike on 18 August. They are protesting the proposal for an amendment to the constitution, called PEC no.32. It will lead to administrative reforms that attack civil servants, destroy public services and cost jobs. Unions and social movement mobilise against the privatisations of state-owned companies, public banks and utilities foreseen by Bolsonaro’s government. Workers are concerned about the labour law reforms that will reduce workers’ rights and increase the precarious jobs and allow wages below the minimum wage.
EPSU has sent a message of solidarity to the Brazilian unions. The PSI Brazilian PSI unions coordination committee has called to join the strike.
