EPSU Seminar on how to regulate Live-In Care Work in Europe - online event

EPSU live-in care work seminar March 2022

(9 February 2022) The recent judgments in cases of live–in (24 hours) care workers in Germany (June 2021) and Switzerland (January 2022) aimed to significantly improve their working conditions and to point to the end of exploitative conditions for live-in carers, making clear that they should benefit from the same labour protection, including the working time. The cases were brought by EPSU affiliates ver.di in Germany and VPOD/SSP in Switzerland,  unions which have developed  policies to regulate the precarious situation of this important, yet neglected, group of care workers.

The seminar will present the two cases and introduce the recommendations of those unions in improving the situation of the sector in their countries.  Representatives of Austrian unions will also participate in the seminar to present their recommendations and the situation in their countries. Finally, we will have comments by a representative of the European Commission. Given that the phenomenon of live-in care work is not only limited to German speaking countries, the seminar will contribute to developing the European Care Strategy to ensure that the Strategy should also aim to improve working conditions and the situation in the sector.
