EPSU salutes courageous firefighters on International Firefighters’ Day

International Firefighters’ Day

(4 May 2022) On International Firefighters’ Day, EPSU shares its solidarity with past firefighters who have died while serving our communities and who dedicated their lives to protecting the safety of us all; to their families, colleagues and comrades. We salute their courage and commitment. They will not be forgotten.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, firefighters and emergency services have been put under even greater pressure. Together with other frontline workers, they put their lives at risk to protect others. EPSU’s Executive Committee expresses its gratitude to all firefighters across Europe and reaffirm their commitment to continue fighting aside firefighters for better legislation on protecting workers from asbestos and other carcinogens and mutagens.

We also remember that firefighters are humans – not superheroes. They are ordinary workers who face traumatic situations on a daily basis. Psychosocial risks and post-traumatic stress are well documented issues faced by firefighters. Prevention and targeted measures are needed at all stages of their work.

Finally, EPSU’s Executive Committee wishes to express solidarity with firefighters in Ukraine: women and men who are tirelessly working to respond to the needs of their community in this the face of ongoing conflict and under the most challenging of circumstances as bullets and bombs surround them.

We wish all firefighters a good International Firefighters’ Day.
