ETUC Youth Training Week

(11 February 2022) Last week, representatives of the EPSU Youth Network took part in the ETUC Youth Training Week in Sesimbra, Portugal, organised in cooperation with ETUI.

The trainings focussed on EU advocacy and lobbying strategies, specifically to help participants develop and implement the ETUC campaign to ban unpaid internships. The trainings were highly informative, with detailed sessions on the EU institutions, EU policies and the European semester, as well as on methodology of EU advocacy. Participants were equipped with tactics and tools to lobby decision makers at both national and EU level.

At the end of the week, participants used their new skills to come up with part of the campaign against unpaid internships. Every participant recorded a short video which will soon be shared on social media as part of the campaign.

EPSU will support the ETUC youth campaign. Further trainings will be organised later this year by EPSU for the whole EPSU Youth Network.

ETUC success with new apprenticeship recommendation

The ETUC reports that it has successfully negotiated and lobbied for a Recommendation by the European Council that sets out a number of measures to improve apprenticeships. These include:involving social partners in the design, governance and implementation of apprenticeship systems; a written agreement on learning and working conditions; a call for apprentices to be paid in line with national or sectoral requirements or collective agreements; and that they should be entitled to social protection, including necessary insurance in line with national legislation.

Union criticises government's care training proposal

The local government and health union, younion, has criticised new government proposals on nursing training that would be offered from the age of 15. The union argues that 15 is too young for people to be involved directly in care and the proposal won't address the shortages in care staff which can only be seriously tackled with better pay and conditions and improved training. Younion also believes it to be a misguided initiative to tackle youth unemployment and argues that it is based on a Swiss system which has a drop out rate of 50%-60%. Public healthcare unions call for urgent negotiations on training

The younion and GÖD public service unions have called for urgent negotiations on measures to address training needs in healthcare in response to an interim report on changes to the nursing and care act. The unions say that around 67000 care workers need to be trained over the next 10 years. However, there have been worrying declines in those completing training in recent years with a 20% fall between 2014 and 2017.
