EPSU holds the first meeting of its Youth network

(20 December 2011) The European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) had its first meeting of the recently established Youth Network. More than 30 young workers from 22 European countries attended the event. The meeting took place on December 12th and 13th in Brussels and it was a great opportunity for young workers in the public sector to debate and take stock of the current state of affairs in the public sector across Europe.

Youth unemployment is on average twice as much as the rate of the grown-ups and paradoxically there is little job creation for young workers in general. In the public sector the situation is even more dramatic due to the general austerity policy, only a few exceptions were discussed and even in those countries were no austerity is being implemented young workers have a raw deal.

The members of the network decided to continue the work to defend decent jobs for young people in the public sector. A coordinating group was agreed to continue to work in the four EPSU sectors and another meeting with training will be organized in the first half of 2012.
