EPSU Early Childhood Education and Care Network discuss need for improved dialogue and the establishment of European Works Councils

EPSU Early Childhood Education and Care Network meeting

(3 April 2024) On the 26 March EPSU Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) network members met for the first time in 2024 and welcomed 5 new members to the network.

Updates from participants and discussions on the current situation in different countries took place, and the discussions highlighted the continuing overall theme among ECEC workers of low pay, poor working conditions and inadequate staffing levels and opposition to the commercialisation of the sector.

With a view to improving dialogue with management, a new EPSU project on establishing an EWC in the multinational ECEC company Dibber (headquartered in Norway) was outlined, along with a presentation of a draft report (to be finalised) comparing several different ECEC companies in France.  The aim of the report is to endeavour to establish EWCs in these companies where applicable.

ECEC workers are clear in their demands to stop the commercialisation of children and their futures.

Finally, participants heard some interesting updates from colleagues in Ireland (SIPTU) including successful pay deals in the last 2 years and their upcoming first ECEC conference.
