EPSU calls on MEPs to respect voice of citizens

Water EPSU calls on European Parliament

(13 December 2021) The European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU), as the backbone of the right2water.eu European Citizens’ Initiative, has sent a letter to the MEP Water Group demanding that the non-formal group of MEPs take the voices of almost two million citizens into account.

The group, supported by MEPs from different groups (ECR, EPP, S&D and Greens), mentions the Sustainable Development Goals on water in their mission statement - but fails to talk about the UN resolution of the human right to water.

We remind the group of the three pillars of the first ever successful right to water ECI, which have still not been implemented in EU law:

  • Guaranteed water and sanitation for all in Europe;
  • No liberalisation of water services;
  • Universal (global) access to water and sanitation.
