Energy unions firm in critique of electricity and gas market

The unions reviewed an evaluation of the internal market which was done for EPSU by PSIRU, Europe's leading academic institution researching services of general interest. The study questions the benefits of the internal market, points out the risks for security and details the impact on employment and working conditions. It concludes that competition in the electricity market will not work given the specifics of the sector. The EPSU Standing committee public utilities supports the conclusion. The study will be part of EPSU's contribution to the Progress report on the internal market of the European Commission. It has to provide this to the European Parliament. The Committee also agreed the EPSU position and options for the future. Derogations are needed from opening the market, countries should be able to chose an alternative from the internal market for electricity and gas, sufficient and well qualified staff should be a priority (11/10/05).
