Electricity workers strike against privatisation in Greece

(3 July 2014) Workers are staging a strike at the Greek state-controlled power utility PPC starting from 2 July 2014. They protest the plans of the government to privatise the firm. The 48h strike wants to raise awareness of the people and the political parties over the negative impact the sale of the publicly owned enterprise will have. After the successful freeze of the privatization of water in Athens and Thessaloniki, workers and citizens in Athens demand to stop this unpopular decision. Government officials have suggested that the workers could be requisitioned, as they did during the underground strike about a year ago. EPSU supports the struggle against privatization of PPC and denounces any menace to curtail trade union and democratic rights.
