Amazon’s market behaviour – EPSU joins demanding tougher policies

(12 September 2022) EPSU joined a group of concerned organisations that contributed comments to the ongoing investigation of the European Commission on market behaviour of Amazon. The Commission makes the investigation in the frame of how Amazon rolls-out its Buy Box and Prime services. The main message is that Amazon’s dominant ‘gatekeeper’ position in e-commerce and other areas poses serious threats to our economies and societies.  Unchecked, this strategy can tend rapidly towards growing monopoly power. The commitments made by Amazon in the context of the investigation will not stop Amazon from abusing its dominance. The main recommendation is for the Commission to reject Amazon’s commitments and to continue to pursue its antitrust cases against Amazon, imposing remedies and penalties.

With Amazon playing a role in many other digital areas and including surveillance technologies and cloud services, addressing its growing role and dominant position is urgent. We are concerned that public authorities are using cloud services of Amazon and locking themselves in with the company reinforcing its long-term position, and continued violation of labour rights. EPSU argues for the development of public digital infrastructures as an alternative.

For the comments.
