EPSU pays tribute to Nelson Mandela

The European Federation of Public Service Unions joins the peoples of South Africa, the workers and our sister trade unions, as well as so many millions across the world in mourning the loss of Nelson Mandela who died 5 December 2013.

He was by far one of the world's most inspiring leaders by his relentless fight against the curse of apartheid, discrimination and social injustice. He fought for and was prepared to die for freedom and for democracy. He emerged from a long incarceration to lead the peoples of his country into a democratic South Africa, always standing up for human rights and never revengeful, and becoming the democratic South Africa's first President.

He saw his role as leader as serving the people. He worked with COSATU, the South African Trade Union Confederation and was committed to change the circumstances of workers and poor. His work and spirit were revolutionary, to make fundamental change to deeply unfair economic and political system.

He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and will be remembered in the union movement and far beyond for his outstanding contributions and understanding that when some are chained, we all are not free.
