Hands off Public Services - No to the Bolkestein Directive

The European trade union demonstration illustrated the resolve of Europe’s workers to oppose the ultra-liberal project to dismantle workers’ protection and public services. More then 3000 workers marched through Brussels and offered petitions to the Belgian employment Minister and the President of the Council of Ministers. URGENT ACTION - Service Directive - Hearing in the European Parliament

A public hearing of the European Parliament (EP) committee on the internal market and consumer protection took place on 11 November 2004, at which a debate on the draft Directive was held. Over 700 European organisation representatives participated illustrating the extremely high level of interest, and controversy, regarding this directive.

The EPSU Executive Committee, meeting on 14 June 2004, took note of the White Paper of the European Commission on Services of General Interest. EPSU acknowledges a number of positive elements contained in the White Paper.
