Unions co-ordinate legal action against government

The Sed-Lex civil service federation is urging individual members to pursue legal action against the government and challenge the imposition of the 25% cut in pay that was implemented from 1 July this year. The union is also considering taking a case to the European Court of Human Rights. Another public sector union, Publisind, is also co-ordinating action among its members. Read more at > Sed Lex (RO)

Unions take protests to parliament

Following the public sector strike on 31 May, trade unions continued their protests right up to the national mobilization outside parliament on 15 June. The unions are fighting planned cuts of 25% to public sector pay and 15% cuts in pensions. The action on 15 June was to provide support to the vote of no confidence in the government. However, the government survived and is pressing ahead with the cuts that are due to take effect from 1 July. Read more at > EPSU (EN)

Public sector workers strike against pay cuts

A public-sector wide strike on 31 May was followed by further action on 1 June as unions protested against a government-imposed 25% cut in pay. Workers in local government, prisons, hospitals, transport and other services were involved. Further action may follow in the health sector later in the month. Government proposes 25% cuts in public sector pay

The government has announced that it wants to make deep cuts in public spending in 2011 to avoid having to call on the International Monetary Fund for further loans. Public sector pay could be cut by 25% and pensions by 15%. Unions and opposition parties are planning protests and the Sex Lex civil service federation is consulting members over strike action. Unions organise series of protests over pay and cuts

Government policies to deal with the economic crisis and the requirements of loan packages involving the International Monetary Fund and European Commission are continuing to meet with widespread resistance from Romanian trade unions. Local government workers take action

4 February 2010
Around 45,000 local government employees joined a warning strike on 2 February in protest at cuts in public sector pay and jobs. The strike was organised by the National Federation of Unions in Administration part of the Sed Lex federation affiliated to EPSU. Massive support for public sector strike

Reports indicate that over 750,000 workers took part in the national public sector strike on 5 October in protest at government plans to cut pay and jobs. The government proposals are in response to a loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund and European Union. Public sector unions warn of strike action

Unions across the public sector have warned the government of the possibility of all-out strike action unless it negotiates a deal over planned changes to pay and cuts in jobs. The government is responding to demands from the International Monetary Fund to reduce public spending and reform public sector pay as part of a loan package that was also negotiated with the European Union. The Sed Lex civil service union oragnised a demonstration outside parliament on 16 September and is gearing up for a public sector wide strike on 5 October. Public sector unions plan general strike on 5 October

Public sector unions have called for a strike on 5 October in protest at the government’s plans to impose a new pay structure. The changes in pay have been proposed as part of a loan package with the International Monetary Fund and European Commission. The unions argue that groups of workers will be left worse off by the changes but that they will call of f the strike if the government agrees to negotiate over reforms to the pay system. IMF loan will lead to public sector pay cuts

The Romanian government has signed a loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund and European Union that will mean substantial cuts in public spending, cuts in public sector jobs and a freeze on pay. Our regional officer in Romania reports that the IMF has asked the Romanian government to freeze the public sector pay bill and allocate the additional income exclusively to investments. Over the next four years, the pay bill, which has more than doubled in the last three years, must be gradually reduced from 8% to 5% of GDP. The IMF requires that the cut in the pay bill is proportional to the contraction in Romania’s economy. The cuts could be carried out by slashing the bonuses of some higher paid employees and through redundancies. Read more at > EU Observer (EN)
